‘Cornish Coast’ Exhibition – 2010

‘Cornish Coast’ was an Exhibition of oil paintings by Andrew Giddens hung at Beside The Wave Gallery, Falmouth, Cornwall. The show opened on 21st October 2012 and ran for two weeks.

Andrew Giddens’ Cornish Coast is a collection of work which captures the spirit of the coves and beaches of the shoreline on which Andrew lives. Set between the Lizard and Penwith Peninsulas, and viewed from the cliffs, coves and from the sea, these works describe an important and profoundly meaningful place for Andrew. Having last year found inspiration in Helford’s rivers and creeks, much beloved of his childhood, this year’s return to the open coast has therefore been equally revitalising.

The collection has evolved slowly, and intentionally so. Painting only when he feels like it, Andrew has found that this has impacted positively on the work he has done, preferring as he does, to paint one good painting rather than ‘ten average works’. In the past, Andrew would expect to complete a painting in one or two sessions, resisting the temptation to return to them again; in this collection, however, he has chosen to leave layer after layer of paint to dry, returning to the work repeatedly until it is resolved.

The majority of work in this collection has been painted in the morning, looking into the light, celebrating the haze beyond the headland, from which layers of landscape combine to create a powerful depth of field, and across which swathes of sparkling water run. Studies are undertaken in the lead-up to a big painting; this allows Andrew to break himself into the subject and to experiment with the challenges of composition and representation and the feeling of the work, and in so doing, allowing him to share with us the precious outcome of what is for Andrew a joyful creative process.
