L’austral

Oils and reclaimed woods by Theo Crutchley-Mack

The L’austral is an old wooden fishing boat, her name referring to a French phrase meaning ‘The wind from the South’. Theo brings the vessel back to life in this painting with tactile textures created using layers of reclaimed plywood, old nails and string from washed up fishing nets.

After the structure is built, it is sealed and saturated with vibrant oil colours, contrasting with the weathered surfaces. The painting reflects both the history of the boat and the renewal of the materials used to create it.
